Service user turns volunteer for PACE project

Andrew Spoor

A former St Cuthberts Care service user has been helping to celebrate the second anniversary of St Michael's Tea Group, one of the parish projects set up with the charity.

As a child Andrew Spoor was a regular at St Cuthberts Care's specialist short break project in Sunderland, which was a forerunner to our Alan Shearer Centre services for people with disabilities. Now Andrew lends a hand each week as a supported volunteer at the Parish and Community Enablement (PACE) project, St Michael's Church Tea Group in Houghton le Spring.

This month Andrew was helping out as the group celebrated its second anniversary, with entertainment from St Mary's Primary School choir and Eddie Barron who sang a range of hits from the 30s and 40s. There was also the opportunity for some dancing and a slice of celebratory chocolate cake for all the guests and volunteers!

Every Monday between 20 and 30 people attend the tea group from 1pm and 3pm to enjoy afternoon tea, bingo and a quiz.
