Volunteers at the new Word of Welcome drop-in cafe in Stockton have settled in so well that they are using their initiative to encourage and invite even more people in need to use the service.

As well as offering a warm welcome to people coming into the drop-in and displaying posters outside to direct people to the project in St Cuthberts Church hall, they are also taking it in turns to talk to customers on the 5p Bus.

Customers using the 5p Bus have been buzzing about having the service in their neighbourhood and they're delighted to have a new meeting place, too: somewhere that isn't only comfortable and cosy but that also offers delicious food and good company.

Each week, the 5p Bus brings clothing and other essential items, which supports the work of the volunteers who offer food, refreshments and conversation in a warm, welcoming and caring environment.

"It can be very difficult for people to take that first step into a new place, especially when they are already feeling vulnerable," said volunteer, Lisa Scott. "A little encouragement and a friendly invitation is sometimes all they need and the 5p Bus gives us the ideal place to be able to do that."
