Open House volunteers with PS Stephen Stringer

Troublesome cooking is a thing of the past for volunteers at Sunderland Open House thanks to the delivery of a brand new range cooker funded by Northumbria Police.

Local PC Stephen Stringer is a regular visitor to the drop-in café and, when he found out that the volunteers prepare and serve around 7000 meals for some of the most vulnerable people in the city, he couldn't wait to help.

Within a matter of months, Stephen had supported the volunteers with an application for funding from the Northumbria Police Charities Fund and dreams of a new cooker were turned into reality.

Paul Andre, Sunderland Charities Fund Trustee, said: "We were delighted to be able to help this charity which provides such great support to hundreds of people in Sunderland."
