Volunteers at Sunderland Open House have helped a young couple get off the streets and find a more permanent place to live.

The couple had been sleeping out on the streets for days in freezing temperatures when they were told about Open House and the friendly support offered by the volunteers running the project.

Receiving a warm welcome from the minute they arrived, they were soon enjoying food and hot drinks and chatting to one of the Open House volunteers about their situation.

"In the two years we've been here, we've built up many useful contacts in the area," said Open House volunteer, Tony Taylor. "We were able to make several calls to people we work closely with and made sure the couple were warm and safe until someone arrived to offer the support they needed."
