Festive fare for those in need

Guests enjoying the festive fare

Dozens of vulnerable, lonely and homeless people have been able to enjoy a slap-up festive meal together as Joe's Place drop-in celebrated its very first Christmas in style.

St Joseph's Church hall in Gateshead was full of festive cheer as volunteers served a traditional three-course lunch with all the trimmings and pupils from nearby St Joseph's Primary and Cardinal Hume schools entertained everyone with carols and Christmas songs.

A free raffle and gifts of food to take away completed the occasion.

Everyone was full of praise for the team of dedicated volunteers who had laid and decorated all the tables, organised the gifts and entertainment and prepared and served the meal.

"I didn't expect all of this," said Kevin who is a regular visitor to the drop-in. "It was a lovely surprise; I feel really spoilt!"

Another regular, John, loves to visit for the conversation as much as the food, which is always delicious. "I meet my friends here and I've made new friends, too. Coming here every Wednesday is the highlight of my week."
