Community welcomes new lunch club at St Robert's

The new lunch club holds its first raffle

A group of volunteers has been supported by St Cuthberts Care to open a brand new weekly lunch club at St Robert's Church in Fenham as part of the charity's Parish and Community Enablement (PACE) initiative.

On their first day, the volunteers welcomed around 20 local people who were overjoyed to have somewhere in their local community to meet, make new friends, enjoy some friendly conversation and take part in some fun activities, as well as share a freshly made, tasty meal together.

For many guests, the lunch club provides them with their only opportunity to socialise and gives them a much-needed break from spending the majority of their time alone.

Joining the guests and volunteers at the first lunch club, parish priest, Shaun O'Neill said, "I'm very proud of the volunteers and the impressive skills they have. I was overcome with the hospitality, care and welcome given to everyone; this is showing the church in such a positive light, especially St Robert's. Everyone went home with a smile on their face after the tasty meal and the lovely get-together."

St Roberts Lunch Club is the 16th PACE project to open in the region, each one restoring community links by bringing people together to share company, conversation and food. The projects are run by volunteers with the support of St Cuthberts Care and local parishes.

St Robert's Lunch Club is held every Thursday between 11am and 2pm at St Robert's Parish Hall on Cedar Road in Fenham. For more information, to reserve a place or find out more about volunteering at the lunch club, contact the church on 0191 273 3903.
