Big birthday surprise for lunch club

June 2013

Guests and volunteers at Kennedy Lunch Club in Blackhill, Consett had a big surprise on their first anniversary when St Cuthberts Care delivered a cake big enough for everyone to enjoy.

As the regular guests and volunteers gathered at the weekly lunch club, they were all looking forward to the special time they always share together; but they had no idea just how special their time was going to be.

Mary said, “We were all busy chatting and catching up when the doors opened and this amazing cake was delivered. It was a lovely surprise. Everyone was over the moon!”

The birthday treat rounded off the delicious, two course meal. Guests were treated too; there were presents for all and extra special prizes for the quiz and games.

In the twelve months since Kennedy Lunch Club first opened its doors, many new friendships have been formed and local people who have felt lonely or isolated can share in the company and conversation of others every week.

Kennedy Lunch Club is held every Thursday between 10.30am and 2.30pm at St Mary’s Parish Hall in Blackhill. Run entirely by volunteers as part of our PACE initiative, the lunch club offers entertainment, games and quizzes as well as a tasty, home-cooked lunch for just £3 per person.
