Friends take lunch club cheer to housebound guest

September 2012

When Mick, one of the regular guests at St Mary's Lunch Club, recently had a fall which left him housebound, it looked like his days of enjoying the company, conversation and his much-loved domino games might be over. However, the bonds of friendship that he'd formed with three other guests, Peter, Brenda and Bill, proved to be too strong to let the accident spoil their times together.

Now, the four friends regularly get together at Mick's house to catch up with each other and, of course, carry on with their friendly, but competitive domino games. "If Mick can no longer get to the lunch club, we're more than happy to take the lunch club to Mick," said Brenda.

The Lunch Club has meant so much to Mick that he recently nominated volunteers from the parish SVP for a Newcastle Building Society award for their work in the community – and was delighted when they won.

The volunteers regularly recommend the lunch club to many of the local elderly people they visit and to other organisations working with elderly people, knowing the difference it can make to people's lives.

There is no doubt that everyone who goes along to St Mary's Lunch Club enjoys and appreciates it so much. Guest, Peter spoke for everyone when he said, "It's five star!"

St Mary's Lunch Club is held every Thursday between 11am and 2pm at St Mary's Church in Burn Lane, Newton Aycliffe and costs just £3 per person. If you or someone you know would like to come along, or, if you would like to know more about volunteering at the lunch club, please ring 01325 313611.
