Paul's first big birthday bash in eight years thanks to Monday Club

July 2012

Volunteers at All Saints Monday Club in Lanchester pulled out all the stops to make the last session before the summer break a night to remember.

The packed programme of fun and entertainment included a sing-along with the five-strong choral group, Young At Heart, lots of prize-winning quizzes, bingo and some special birthday celebrations.

With a home-made birthday cake complete with candles, cards and presents to unwrap, regular guest, Paul Ashburn was enjoying his first big birthday celebration for eight years, thanks to the Monday Club.

"I'm unemployed and in a wheelchair so getting out to mark even special occasions can be quite difficult," said Paul.

"Before coming here, there wasn't really much to do. I was a bit nervous about coming, but I'm really glad I did. I love everything about the Monday Club, but what makes it really special for me is the company and conversation."

Three other guests were also given the special treatment to celebrate their recent birthdays and Parish Priest Canon Bob Spence joined the party to add his best wishes.

"It's a fantastic place," said Canon Spence, "I'm always bowled over when I visit and see how much people are enjoying it. The volunteers are doing a fantastic job."

All Saints Monday Club re-opens on September 3 and runs every Monday between 6.30pm and 8.30pm in All Saints Church Hall on Kitswell Road, Lanchester. For more information or if you or someone you know would like to join in, contact Kate Edwards on 01207 521753.
