Jubilee weekend brings extra-special moments

June 2012

Jubilee weekend gave many of our PACE projects an opportunity to celebrate and reminisce about the Queen's 60 year reign.

Among those holding a patriotic party was Claremont Lunch Club in Blyth where guests and volunteers thoroughly enjoyed Jubilee themed activities, competitions and entertainment arranged to mark the special occasion.

The entire parish hall was decked out in red, white and blue and as the 30 guests sat down to their tasty, home-cooked meal, glasses were raised in a toast to the Queen.

In the weeks leading up to the event, everyone had been working hard on Jubilee-themed hats for a fancy hat competition and an array of bonnets, boaters and top hats were judged on the day by Fr Quinn. A guest singer entertained everyone with a selection of vintage songs which had volunteers and guests alike singing along.

The celebrations, as well as the regular lunch club dates, mean so much to those who attend and overwhelmed one particular guest on the day. Volunteer, Eveline Allison said, "At the end of the day, one lady actually broke down in tears saying it was the highlight of her week and that she always looked forward to Friday coming round, especially as it was the only day she managed to get out.  Hearing that and knowing we are making a real difference in people's lives makes everything so worthwhile."

In Ashington, volunteers at the aptly-named Jubilee Tea group welcomed their first guests with a delicious, home baked high tea, served in style at St Cuthberts Care's Parkhead Centre.

Thanks to Parkhead staff, the entire centre was festooned with bunting and Union Jack flags which created the perfect atmosphere for themed quizzes and activities organised by the team of volunteers.

Everyone had a wonderful time sharing memories and reminiscences of the Queen's 60 year reign and Parish Priest, Fr Stephen Watson, who has supported the Jubilee Tea Group from its earliest days, also joined volunteers and guests for the festivities.
