Clothes, toys and toiletries were among the dozens of bags of donations collected by students at Newcastle College for people who depend on our 5p Bus.

The Health and Social Care students had researched a number of local charities before choosing to support the work of the 5p Bus, encouraging fellow students, tutors and college staff to donate their unwanted clothing and extra Christmas gifts.

Within a matter of weeks, piles of donations had been gathered and a group of students were given the opportunity to visit the 5p Bus when it came to collect the items from the college.

As well as organising the donations, students took time to look into the work of the 5p Bus and produced their own artwork to display around the college to help encourage others to lend their support.

"The enthusiasm shown by the students for our work is a credit to the college and we are really grateful to have their support," said 5p Bus Manager, Iris Boyd. "So many people in need around the region rely on our service that our stocks are always in need of replenishing. I'd like to thank everyone at Newcastle College who contributed so generously."

College tutor, Erica Hanson said, "Our aim was to collect 1000 items over Christmas and I think we've achieved that. Everyone enjoyed taking part so much that we'd now like to make our collections a regular event and encourage even more of our college campus to get involved."
